Honda is said to have offered to make Nissan a subsidiary , which Nissan was not willing to do. Honda has not wanted to proceed with an integration on other terms.
According to anonymous sources Reuters has spoken to, Nissan is primarily interested in a partner from the technology industry based in the United States. One name that has been mentioned in this connection is Foxconn, which produces iPhones and is also involved in the development of electric cars.
Nissan is in a challenging economic situation and may be forced to lay off up to 9,000 employees and reduce production capacity by a fifth to save money.
Nissan has declined to comment on Reuters' story.
