The number of scrapped cars is the lowest in 24 years

Here at home, the car fleet has become a bit older. And in Sweden, a record few cars are scrapped right now. There is more money in keeping the cars running.

Here at home, a new estimate shows that the Danish car fleet has aged a bit after only getting younger in the last 20 years.

At the same time – on the other side of the Øresund – a record few Swedes choose to have their otherwise older cars scrapped.

Carup writes this based on figures from the Swedish Transport Agency.

At Jönköping Bildemontering you also notice that the number of scrapped cars is the lowest in Sweden since the new millennium began. Specifically, in the first half of 2024, 62,437 cars have been scrapped in Sweden.

– I think that people sell their cars abroad instead of the krone being so low that it has a contributing cause, says the owner of Jönköping Bildemontering Simon Dahl to the media.

The statistics confirm that there is something to the matter. In 2023 alone, Swedish exports of older passenger cars increased by 39 percent compared to the year before.

Nevertheless, the country's government is trying to get more of the older passenger cars scrapped. It happens i.a. by enticing with a somewhat higher scrap premium. However, it is already attracting criticism. Read more about it here .

Here at home, however, there have also been figures on which cars the Danes get rid of. At least in large numbers. The development is perhaps not so surprising.

Because it is largely cars from brands that have been and continue to be popular that now end up on scrap yards around the country. Read more about it here .

Something completely third is that the sale of new cars in the Nordics is having a hard time. The latest figures from the car importers show that it is actually only in Denmark that sales have progressed.

The same figures show that Norway's new car sales are at their lowest level for more than 30 years. Although 92 percent of the few cars that were sold after all, now only run on electricity.
