Media: BMW has approved the M3 Touring as an electric car

Regardless of what happens, a complete electrification of the sedan model is first. But an electric M3 Touring is also possible.

BMW gave us what many BMW fans have been yearning for for at least two decades when the current M3 model range was expanded with a station wagon.

The M3 Touring, as the Germans call it, came into the world in 2022, and largely shares much of its bodywork – and the entire drivetrain – with the rest of the M3 range. But now there may be something new on the way.

Of course, the M3, with its 3-liter inline six, twin turbos and at least 510 horsepower, is not on its way out. But BMW is considering whether it is not time for an electric M3 Touring. And not least when.

According to Motor1, we may get a little closer to the answer on the BimmerPost forum. Here, an insider has allegedly sprinkled in a little… yes, insider knowledge from BMW's head office in Munich.

And it is interesting reading. For the source claims that the bosses in Munich have already given the green light to the development of an electric M3 Touring. Not just that.

The car will not be based on the current CLAR platform, which the petrol M3 shares with the rest of the 3-Series programme. Instead, BMW's engineers will work on the assumption that the car will be based on the dedicated electric car platform Neue Klasse.

From here we already know that BMW will spit out a car that they think resembles the 80s 3-Series E30. Read more about how it all works here.

The fact that the right bosses have the thumbs up doesn't mean that you can throw away your savings on an electric M3 tomorrow or for that matter next month.

An electric M3 Touring is unlikely to hit the roads before 2028 at the earliest. And even then, the electric car won't be able to push its gasoline-powered sister out of the way. BMW has no plans to abandon the internal combustion engine. Neither the one that runs on diesel or petrol.
