First BMW – now Volkswagen can cancel huge contract

BMW has already torn up a contract worth 14 billion kroner with the Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt. Now Volkswagen can do the same.

The Swedish battery manufacturer dances on the brink of its own existence. Production has not kicked into gear, and now Volkswagen is considering tearing up a contract.

The news comes just a few days after it became clear that BMW has lost patience with the Swedish company.

At the end of June, BMW tore up a contract with Northvolt in the middle because the delivered battery packs were neither of the agreed quality nor in the promised quantity. And now several car brands may be ready to do the same.

The media quotes anonymous sources with knowledge of the situation. The sources believe they know that Volkswagen has asked a so-called 'internal task force' to look into the collaboration with Northvolt.

The VAG top wants to know if the Swedes can deliver what they promise or if there is a need to find another supplier. However, Volkswagen did not wish to comment on the story to the German industry media.

Problems in production and with the quality of the battery packs have not only meant that BMW, which is still an investor in Northvolt, has torn up the contract. The company's general situation means that plans for more factories have been dropped.

Among other things, Northvolt should have built a factory in Germany. Specifically in Schleswig-Holstein. But now there are big question marks over whether the company will survive at all.

Even though the EU has previously approved a loan of 6.5 billion Danish kroner for the construction of the factory in Germany from 2026.

Conversely, Northvolt is not the only battery project in serious trouble. After 10 quarters with large losses, the world's fourth largest battery manufacturer is now so much on its knees that the director has declared a state of emergency. Read more about it here .
