Audi's new invention aims to cure range anxiety

Audi has applied for and obtained the patent for an invention that the Germans must believe can cure range anxiety in electric cars. The answer is… a trailer.

Audi has been granted a patent for an invention to alleviate range anxiety in electric car owners.

Cut to the bone, this is a "battery trailer" that can be connected to the electric car and thus extend the car's range.

The battery in the trailer is designed so that it works without problems with the car's other power-demanding systems. But that's not all.

That's what Carmoses writes.

Because in addition to increasing the range, the trailer can also optimize the car's efficiency. The battery is able to adapt to varying temperatures and the electric car's current battery capacity.

To address concerns about the ability of electric cars to tow a trailer at all, Audi has designed the battery pack from the trailer in such a way that it can also be placed inside the car itself.

In this way, you can actually avoid having to drag the trailer itself around. Because no matter how we turn and turn, an electric car with a trailer in tow will lose some range because it is used to drag the extra dead weight around.

Something that the long-time motoring journalist Harry Metcalfe, who is known from Evo Magazine, talks about how he himself has experienced during a test drive in an electric Porsche Macan.

Audi's battery trailer is just one of many solutions car manufacturers have developed to improve the range of electric cars.

Other brands, such as Xpeng, Mazda and Hyundai, have taken an alternative approach with EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicles) models. These models combine a battery pack and electric motors with a smaller combustion engine that acts as a generator.

Inventions are generally enough. Also in the automotive industry. Swedish Isak Löfgren sits on one of them. His company will convert any petrol and diesel car into a hybrid solution. And that in just four hours per car. The EU believes so much in the idea that the union will now throw money after the unloading. Read more about it here .
