Tesla is not allowed to do that. Yet the car brand illegally asked Kjell Leikvik to pay 118,000 kroner to deliver a Model X.
Tesla illegally demanded 119,000 kroner to deliver a Model X to Kjell Leikvik.
The Leikvik couple had ordered a brand new Model X in the spring of 2021 and expected delivery within a little over a year.
But the car was not delivered as agreed. And when the Norwegian government imposed additional taxes on electric cars in 2022, it suddenly became very necessary to get the car registered as soon as possible.
And at least before the higher taxes came into effect in January 2023. That just didn't happen. It wasn't until the spring of 2023, two years after the purchase, that Tesla was able to deliver the car.
This is what Norwegian Motor writes.
Because for delivery, Kjell Leikvik had paid an invoice of 999,732 Norwegian kroner, which is equivalent to just over 640,000 Danish kroner for the car. However, the next day he received another bill.
Tesla wants him to pay an additional 118,000 Norwegian kroner – almost 76,000 Danish kroner – for the car. The car, Tesla said – would not be handed over for that.
When Leikvik refused to pay the new bill, citing that the price had already been agreed and paid, Tesla canceled the entire deal except for a deposit of just under 640 kroner, which the brand kept.
The Leikvik couple would not accept that. Therefore, they complained to the consumer authorities, who ended up finding them right.
In the decision, the authority writes that Tesla's contract terms are illegal, as the car brand did not specify a clear delivery date.
According to both the Norwegian Consumer Code and the EU Consumer Rights Directive, which Norway follows, a specific delivery deadline must be set if the delivery time exceeds 30 days.
The board ruled that Tesla could not claim the extra 118,000 kroner, and that the couple had the right to buy the car at the original agreed price.
Tesla has not appealed the decision. Kjell Leikvik will therefore receive a Model X for almost 1 million Norwegian kroner. According to Motor, however, the car brand has not wanted to answer whether it is now revising the illegal contracts.
– What Tesla did makes us customers helpless, the couple says.
However, the Leikvik family chose not to buy the Tesla and spent the money on a BMW instead. Tesla subsequently sold the Model X that the couple was supposed to have to another customer.
