New milestone for electric cars in Denmark: A quarter of a million on the street

Although there are still by far the most fossil-fueled cars in Denmark, Mobility Denmark is now celebrating a milestone.

June 11, 2024 marked a new milestone for green transport in Denmark. On this day, the number of all-electric passenger cars on Danish roads reached a quarter of a million.

This means that electric cars now make up almost 9 percent of the total car stock in the country. This landmark moment was reached just five months after the stock passed 200,000 electric cars.

Mads Rorvig, managing director of Mobility Denmark, notes: "Electric car sales have really taken off in recent years, and every month electric cars take up more of both car sales and car stock. This is of great benefit to the green transition, and therefore we are delighted to celebrate the ongoing milestones."

Several factors have contributed to the increasing popularity of electric cars in Denmark. The charging infrastructure has been significantly expanded, which has made it easier for electric car owners to charge their cars.

In addition, more electric car models have come on the market, and the range of the cars has been improved. Electric cars have also for a period been exempt from taxes, which has been a significant factor in their increasing sales. However, these charges are expected to be introduced again from 2026.

Rorvig expresses concern for the future: "Although the popularity of electric cars is increasing, it is not a given that the electric car stock will continue to set records. An increase in taxes from 2026 will lead to a slowdown in sales, which we have also seen in several of our neighboring countries . That is why it is crucial for the green transition that the taxes are kept calm."

The top 20 electric car models in the Danish car stock show that Tesla dominates the market completely with Model Y and Model 3 in the top two places, followed by Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq iV.
