DEBATE: People in electric cars get unfair advantages, Paul believes

The difference in car taxes is so extreme that it is completely beside the point, says Paul Vestergaard. He will instead introduce a kilometer-based tax.

"The system rewards those who drive electric or hybrid cars to a degree, so it is completely beside what is reasonable.

I have always kept and maintained my cars so that they are between 15 and 20 years in my possession. Currently an Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro which is now 19 years old.

That car runs approx. 11 per liter and costs almost DKK 14,000 in annual tax. The amount rises to DKK 18,000 in 2026, when the last tax increases are imposed. We cover approximately 7,000 km. Yearly.

A monster BMW or Mercedes-Benz with a hybrid/petrol engine costs DKK 300 in half-yearly tax – It runs maybe 50 kilometers on electricity and then otherwise goes 12 to 14 kilometers per litre.

The hybrid car does maybe 40,000 to 50,000 km annually and thereby emits much more than my 7,000 km. I maintain my cars and thus save CO2 in the production of new cars.

Why have politicians ignored road pricing? It would make everyone think twice before taking a trip. In addition, there are all the motorhomes that are now everyone's property.

If road pricing is introduced, traffic density will be reduced and CO2 emissions for road development will be saved. At the same time, road taxes must be introduced on foreign cars in Denmark."

Paul Vestergaard, Vejle.
