Internet giant Amazon becomes a car dealer

The internet giant started as a platform for books. Now Jeff Bezos and co. will also sell cars. First, Hyundai in the US.

Amazon Auto is the new thing. At least in the US, where the internet giant will initially sell Hyundai models.

However, more car brands are welcome, says Amazon's Autos global director, Fan Jin, in a press release .

– We are delighted to have Hyundai as our exclusive launch partner and look forward to welcoming more brands and expanding our range as the programme grows, says the director.

It's only been a year since Amazon announced that it would move into the car dealership's exclusive brands. And now that's the case.

Ultimately, however, Amazon is nothing more than a platform – a middleman – between the car brand and the customers. If something goes wrong with the cars themselves, it is still the individual dealer and thus the car brand's responsibility.

Whether Amazon Auto will come to Denmark is highly doubtful. The internet giant is not even present in Denmark. At least not officially. However, the German part of the company has been adapted in several ways to suit Danish customers.

Back in the US, as mentioned, it starts with Hyundai. Furthermore, only residents of 48 cities can currently buy cars this way. But the online service promises that it will start expanding both geographically and with more car brands as early as next year. However, no names have been set for either at this time.

However, selling cars online is not necessarily a matter of luck. The service Cazoo had to admit that back in May. The platform, which was worth $7 billion during the coronavirus pandemic, voluntarily filed for bankruptcy at the end of the month.
