Electric cars are plummeting in value – here are the biggest losers

Greater range and generally faster development in the new car market causes the market for used electric cars in particular to plummet. That leaves many losers.

The prices of used electric cars are plummeting at the moment, and there are many indications that this trend will continue for a long time to come.

According to new figures from the Swedish classifieds site Wayke, which covers the majority of used sales in Sweden, there has been a significant drop in the price of electric cars in the past year.

Over the past year, the average price of used electric cars has fallen by 14 percent. Martin Fransson, who is the managing director of Wayke, confirms this trend and notes that it is especially electric cars that the price drops go beyond.

– We can see that the electrical transition continues, even if the pace is lower than it has been in the past, he says in a press release .

However, the value of electric cars can vary greatly. Some electric cars have experienced a loss in value of between 40 and 50 percent of their new price after just 50,000 kilometers. At the same time, the selection of used electric cars has grown significantly. Over the past two years, the number of used electric cars on the market has almost quadrupled.

A contributing factor to this development is Tesla's significant price reductions, which also affect the prices of other used electric cars. Tesla has repeatedly lowered the prices of their new cars throughout Europe, which has quickly led to a necessary and quite natural (hard, ed.) adaptation of the rest of the used car market.

Although the sale of used electric cars continues to increase, the growth rate is not as high as before. At the moment, barely every ten buyers of used cars choose an electric car.
