BMW reports sold out of car that doesn't exist yet

It doesn't even exist yet. And BMW was very doubtful whether it would even be built. But now the Skytop Roadster is sold out.

BMW has announced that the exclusive Skytop Roadster is sold out, even though the production model has not yet been unveiled. The new model, which began as a concept presented at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2024, will be built in extremely limited numbers.

Only 50 examples of the targa-inspired Skytop Roadster will be produced. No more, no less. BMW has also confirmed that all 50 cars have already been purchased. The German brand, however, will not disclose the price.

BMW has a tradition of producing exclusive cars in very limited numbers. In 2022, they launched the 3.0 CSL, which was also limited to 50 cars. At the time, the price was 750,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 5.6 million Danish kroner.

Some of these cars were later sold on the second-hand market for over 9 million kroner. It is therefore likely that the Skytop Roadster will experience a similar explosion on the 'second-hand market'.

– The BMW Skytop is a car that offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level.

"To be able to announce that this car will be built is a dream come true. Thank you for the positive response from around the world and to the team that worked on the project," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of Design at BMW Group.

Like the 3.0 CSL, the Skytop Roadster is based on existing BMW technology. It will be built on the same platform as the 8 Series. But visually the two models don't have much in common.

The engine is BMW's most powerful V8 engine, a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged unit that also features in the M8 Competition. The engine produces 617 horsepower and propels the Skytop Roadster from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds.

The car is equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. Although the Skytop Roadster offers impressive performance and an exclusive design, most car enthusiasts will probably never see one on the road. That is because of the very small number.
