Fired Formula 1 driver buys Alfa Romeo for 7 million

Only 33 copies of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale will be built. And one of them will go to the fired Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas.

Valtteri Bottas himself describes the switch to Sauber as "one big mistake". But the relationship with former main sponsor Alfa Romeo is now fine.

In any case, the Finn, who after being fired from Sauber is back at Mercedes as a reserve driver, has secured one of the only 33 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradales to be built.

Bottas has chosen a combustion engine for the car. That means a 3-liter V6 with twin turbos and 620 horsepower. The car will reportedly top out at 333 km/h.

Fortunately, Alfa Romeo also offers its customers to build the car with an electric motor. But the fast Finn has chosen to ignore that.

The 33 was supposed to be the last car Alfa Romeo ever built with a petrol engine. But a lot has happened since the car was presented as a production-ready concept back in August 2023.

Now the Stellantis brand says that it can't do without the combustion engine after all . In the US alone, it will be too big a challenge for the brand's dealers.

– In our US network alone, we have 110 dealers, and it would be very challenging for them to survive with a portfolio consisting only of electric cars, says the head of the North American importer, Chris Feuell.

Alfa Romeo is already struggling with declining sales figures in the US. During 2024, sales fell to just 8,865 cars. That's a 19 percent downward adjustment compared to 2023. Here in Denmark, just 18 new Alfas were sold in the same period.

As for the 33 Stradale, it's unlikely to come to Denmark. The price alone should deter even the most well-heeled Dane. Especially if there's a tax involved.

That said, Alfa Romeo hasn't actually revealed the price publicly. But the normally well-informed Car and Driver believes the car will start at $1 million. That's a little over 7 million Danish kroner at today's exchange rate.
