Japanese media claim the new engine is to be used in a mid-engined revival of the all-wheel drive Toyota MR2 GRMN.
Toyota is one of the brands that has denied the death of the internal combustion engine. And now the Japanese are working on a two-liter engine with a whopping 600 horsepower.
At least that is what a number of Japanese media – including the usually well-oriented Bestcar – write.
The engine must manage without any kind of electrical assistance. So hybrid package. And yet the Japanese should be able to conjure up 600 horsepower.
A number of less potent versions of the same petrol engine must also be on the way. Toyota is reportedly working on a version with 400 horsepower and one with 300 horsepower.

According to Bestcar, all the information comes from 'inside sources' at Toyota, and if it holds water with the 600 horsepower, Toyota will be able to beat brands such as Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes. At least when it comes to horsepower per liter displacement.
Rumors will also know that Toyota's new engine will have a small displacement of one and a half litres. Whether it is that or the larger 2-liter engine that will be in a new version of the center-engined MR2 is a little unclear.
But there are already many indications that Toyota is developing both a new MR2 and a new hatchback with the classic name Starlet.
And although rumors are just rumours, and must therefore always be taken with certain caveats, Bestcar believes that Toyota is already capable of both coupling the engine to a six-speed manual gearbox and an eight-speed automatic unloading.
Toyota has actually confirmed that, in collaboration with Subaru and Mazda, they are working on engines in the sizes 1.5 and 2.0 litres. In fact, the car brands jointly confirmed it as recently as May this year. But technical details are for the time being small.
