You'll never guess the engine in this 36-year-old "Mercedes"

The Puritans will probably frown. But in 2021, this 1988 Mercedes 300CE got both a manual transmission and a Toyota engine.

Right must be right. The 2JZ engine in this Mercedes 300CE is not Toyota's invention alone. The car brand asked Yamaha for a good deal of help.

Which they got, and the rest? Yes, it's history. And in fact, neither one nor the other Japanese company has anything to do with this 36-year-old Mercedes.

However, that does not change the fact that the car had one 3-liter, 6-cylinder engine replaced with the other at some point in 2021. And six manual gears so that it doesn't have to be sluggish.

But it is well kept. Even so good that you really have to be a Mercedes connoisseur – or look under the long bonnet – to find out. Although the cabin actually also gossips about the conversion.

However, the cream-colored leather and aluminum gear knob tell only parts of the story. The speedometer is made digital. And then we should probably have lost the last Mercedes puritan.

If you're still reading along, we can briefly say that the digital trip counter keeps track of 70,000 miles, equivalent to 112,000 kilometers. However, the seller states that the car's total mileage is unknown.

So is the number of horsepower. Although at least the BorgWarner charger indicates there's probably a bit more than the original 180 horsepower to play with. Just a little.

There is also no doubt that a similar conversion here at home will cost much more than the 36,000 dollars, equivalent to a quarter of a million kroner, for which the car has just been sold at Bring A Trailer.
