The police's illegal Tesla has been idle for 5 years

The police in Belgium bought two Teslas five years ago. But one of the cars does not yet have a meter, it says.

Five years ago, the police in the Belgian municipality of Zaventem spent several hundred thousand kroner of taxpayers' money on two Teslas. But one of the cars doesn't have a one meter card yet.

The whole trouble is due to the fact that the workshop in Holland, which has rebuilt the cars, has gone bankrupt. What remains is one of the cars, which has not been properly built and is therefore not allowed to be used by the police in the Belgian municipality.

In 2022, the paperwork on one of the ordered Teslas was put in order. But the approval for the second police car is still nowhere to be found.

Therefore, it must not be driven on the road either. However, the municipality believes that the car can still be used.

– That car has been standing still for five years, so I wonder if it will still be able to be recovered, says Erik Rennen, from the opposition council in Zaventem municipality, to the media AD .

But that's not the end of the story. Because in Zaventem, the people responsible in the municipality actually know very well where the papers on the car are. They are located in the Netherlands.

Here, a leasing company claims that the bankrupt company which rebuilt the car for the police, that they also bought the same car themselves. The leasing company therefore refuses to hand over the papers to the police in Belgium.

– The company is now trying to do everything it can to bring Tesla back to the Netherlands, but we bought the electric car, so the Tesla will stay here.

– We are now waiting for a trial to start in the Netherlands, but it is not yet clear when that will happen. We are convinced that we will be able to use the car in the future, says Ingrid Holemans, mayor of Zaventem.

But when the papers eventually land with the police in Belgium – and thus whether they will ever be allowed to use the one Tesla – is still uncertain.
