That's how little Volkswagen earned per new car in 2023

A profit of 134 billion Danish kroner sounds impressive. But per car is the vanishing bit that the Volkswagen Group brings home.

The financial year 2023 for the entire Volkswagen group, which in addition to VW includes brands such as Skoda, Seat, Audi and Lamborghini, ended in a plus.

Even a quite nice one of its kind. The bottom line is a plus of a whopping 17.9 billion euros, or just over 134 billion Danish kroner.

This is shown in the group accounts which were presented on 1 March this year.

But when you spread it out over the number of cars sold, it immediately looks somewhat more modest. Even if the numbers are still in the black.

9.2 million cars distributed across the entire group means that Volkswagen per car brought home 14,300 Danish kroner per car when the tax is paid. However, it is significantly better than many other car manufacturers.

Chinese Nio loses a massive DKK 120,000 per car. But things are actually even worse for the two American brands Lucid and Rivian. And at Ford, you can note a loss of one million kroner per electric car.

Back at Volkswagen, the number of cars delivered increased overall by 12 percent. For electric cars in isolation, things went even better with an increase of 35 percent. However, the car type accounts for less than every tenth car Volkswagen sells.

The figures for this year have only become more difficult to predict. Volkswagen has announced that it will take DKK 500 billion from a pool for pure electric cars and use it on the internal combustion engine. Read more about how and why here .

However, some parts of the VW Group are doing significantly better than others. At Lamborghini, for example, things are going so well that the order book is closed several years into the future. Just as the Italians do not need Volkswagen's help in the development of the Huracan replacement. Read more about it here .
