A complaint from the business community, among others, didn't help. At least not at first. Stockholm is allowed to ban all petrol and diesel cars.
Stockholm – The Stockholm city government has been granted permission to ban diesel and gasoline cars in a zero-emission zone.
The Administrative Court has rejected complaints about the decision to introduce an environmental zone in Stockholm.
The environmental zone, which was supposed to come into effect at the turn of the year, was stopped in November after a number of complaints.
The complaints came from both companies and individuals.
However, the Administrative Court has now decided that there is no reason to change the decision to introduce the environmental zone.
– The Administrative Court believes that it has not been proven that the city council's decision is contrary to the law. There is therefore no reason to overturn the decision, writes Attorney General Eva-Lotta Hedin in a press release .
It is still unclear what will happen now. The County Administrative Board must approve the plans before the environmental zone can be introduced. However, it is also possible to appeal the decision to the next level.
– The ambition is to open the environmental zone in the spring, says traffic council member Lars Strömgren (MP) in a statement.
In the longer term, there are plans to expand the environmental zone.
– The fact that the zone is so small makes it less manageable. Some think it's going too fast, others that the zone should be larger, said Lars Strömgren in an interview with Vi Bilägare last year.
Stockholm has taken a step closer to banning diesel and petrol cars in the city centre. The ban will apply in a zero-emission zone planned for central Stockholm.
