Smashed and stole speed cameras – two men arrested

Swedish police have arrested and charged two men who law enforcement believes have smashed and stolen equipment from speed cameras.

Police in Sweden have arrested two men suspected of smashing a speed camera and stealing equipment from it.

The arrest took place on Monday night this week when the police were following a car on Riksvej 24 from Våxtorp towards Laholm.

The car was stopped at the train station outside Laholm, and the two men in the car, a 45-year-old and a 23-year-old, both appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The driver of the car also did not have a driver's license.

In the back seat of the car, the police found an expensive system camera, a radar and a router.

– The camera is of the model used in speed cameras. There was also a radar and a router that are identical to those in the speed cameras, Dan Larsson from Laholm police explained to Hallandsposten.

The two men were already known to the police, but the police have not stated exactly what they were known for.

Suspicion quickly fell on the fact that the equipment came from a speed camera on Riksvej 15 in Skåne, but the police did not know exactly which one.

It was a journalist from Hallandsposten who helped the police identify the smashed speed camera.

The journalist had seen the overturned camera outside Våxtorp.

"You have something special to thank you for. Thank you for the information," Dan Larsson told the journalist.

The two arrested men are suspected of a number of offenses, including drunk driving, grossly illegal driving, theft and illegal handling of explosive goods.

The latter charge is due to the discovery of homemade fireworks in the car. Incidentally, this is not the first time that the theft of speed cameras has given the police in Sweden something to do.

Last year, several men were convicted of stealing hundreds of speed cameras. They were all found under a bed at the home of one of the men now convicted. Read more about it here .
