Not built for 20 years – someone bought a new Fiat Multipla

A new Fiat Multipla has not been built since 2004. Yet a brand new car has been registered in Europe in July 2024.

The Fiat Multipla is considered by many to be one of the ugliest cars in the world. If not the ugliest. Yet there are still buyers for it here, 20 years after the assembly line stopped.

It reveals information from German Dataforce, which monitors new car sales in all 27 car markets within the EU.

In fairness, it must be said that it is a little imprecisely stated. Because it is not specified whether it is a pre-facelift or facelifted car. Regardless, the car is at least 11 years old, because it has number plates on it. So for the first time ever.

The complete sales list can be found here .

But the fact that someone within the EU has bought a brand new Fiat Multipla in the gentleman's year 2024 is only one of the surprises on Dataforce's list.

It turned out that one new BMW Z8 has also been sold. The car that left the assembly line 21 years ago. 16 new BMW i3s were also sold, although that car has not been built since 2022.

Volvo sold one new V50, even though the assembly line stopped way back in 2012. Honda sold one 23-year-old Prelude, and then Fiat actually got rid of three new Barchettas. A car that was last new a full 19 years ago.

However, the age president of the sales lists is a Rolls-Royce Corniche. One like this hasn't been built as a new car since 1995. That's almost three decades ago.

It actually happens from time to time that very old cars are sold as brand new. That is, because they are technically brand new.

A year ago, the Australian part of Top Gear could say, for example, that the country's last Lexus LFA has been sold. The buyer is the dealer.

This is because the car had to be registered in order not to fall below a limit that would otherwise make it impossible to get the car on number plates in the country as a new car.
