New car brand builds V8 engine that burns hydrogen

First, NamX wanted to build a hydrogen car with fuel cells. Now the French brand is trying to replace it with an internal combustion engine that burns hydrogen.

If the name NamX doesn't mean anything to you, you're quickly forgiven.

It is both years and days ago that the Chinese brand first showed off a hydrogen car at the Paris Motor Show in October 2022.

At the time, the French had plans for a hydrogen car designed by Pininfarina fuel cells. It had to be able to be refueled lightning fast and have a range of up to 800 kilometers.

The plan was to get serious about production as early as 2025. But now there have been other problems. Buns shaped like a 6.2-liter V8 engine that burns hydrogen.

The company itself explains this about the car.

Information about the engine is still extremely limited. But company founder Faouzi Annajah says he changed his mind for three reasons.

Firstly, to avoid heavy batteries, secondly, to build on a long European tradition of developing the internal combustion engine. And last but not least to preserve the joy of driving a car.

The plan is still a launch in 2025. But now NamX is said to be moving it all to 'towards the end of the year'.

On the other hand, the car, which is a coupe-like crossover, will be available in two versions by then. The basic version is expected to cost 65,000 euros, equivalent to 484,000 kroner. For that kind of money, you get rear-wheel drive and 300 horsepower.

The top model NamX GTH is expected to cost 95,000 euros, equivalent to 708,000 kroner. That's right with 550 horsepower, four-wheel drive and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds.

NamX is far from the only one who wants a combustion engine to run on hydrogen. Ferrari has the same idea with an inverted V6 engine. Read more about it here .
