Mercedes is the first to test self-driving cars at level 4

As the first in China, Mercedes has secured the right to test self-driving cars at level four out of five.

Mercedes is the first car manufacturer in China to be allowed to test coring trains at level 4 of automated coring. That is, on a public road.

This is written by Automobilwoche .

Level 4 means that the individual car drives completely by itself in a limited number of scenarios. That is, without the slightest interference from the driver. At the second highest level of self-driving technology, the driver can concentrate on other things.

And not only that. Because theoretically, a steering wheel at level 4 is not necessary at all. But as the rules are now, the steering wheel cannot be dispensed with, because the driver must be able to intervene at any time to take control.

On LinkedIn, Mercedes' Swedish-German CEO, Ola Källenius, talks about the brand's development team reaching something close to an Olympic gold medal when it comes to automated traffic.

Mercedes is also far ahead with the technology. While most car brands – including competitors such as Tesla and Ford – operate on level 2, which is technically only slightly more advanced than the regular cruise control, Mercedes has already been allowed to operate on level 3.

At least in the US. Here, the brand has promised that they will take the blame for all accidents that the self-driving technology may be involved in. Read more about it here.

Back in China, Mercedes has equipped i.a. S-Classes with a sea of sensors to test level 4. Also far more than the production S-Class has today. Several test trips are also planned, emphasizes development manager Markus Schäfer.

– We plan to carry out tests on designated roads and highways as part of Mercedes-Benz China's research projects, it reads.
