Kia recalls 427,000 cars without transmission

Kia has discovered that yet another model is affected by a fault which enables the cars to roll away when the gear selector is put into 'P'.

Kia is having more than a hard time with automatic transmissions at the moment. Here at home, 38 cars are a very small part of a larger recall of the electric car e-Soul.

And now it turns out that exactly the same error has affected another 472,000 copies of the Telluride SUV.

The cars can simply roll away, even if they are parked with the engine off and the gear selector in 'P' for park gear.

That is what the US road safety authorities NHTSA writes.

In connection with the recall, Kia is now again urging owners to use the handbrake in the cars. But the South Korean brand has long known about the problem.

Already four years ago, it was crazy about the electric car e-Soul. Those cars could also roll away even though the engine was off and the gear selector was in 'P'. A problem Kia apparently hasn't lost here four years later.

And now it turns out that Kia has also known about the error on the larger Telluride for quite some time. That was way back in April 2022.

Here, the brand was made aware of 16 instances where the Telluride model either moved in 'P' or said 'weird' between gear changes.

When Kia inspected the cars, signs of damage were found in the mechanics of six cars. Therefore, the many hundreds of thousands of cars have now been recalled. The first owners will be notified at the beginning of May.
