Kenneth wants to remove the weight tax on vintage cars

It will cost the state treasury 60 million kroner, says Kenneth Fredslund Petersen about the proposal that will remove the weight tax on vintage cars.

In 2019, Norway removed the registration tax on all cars over 20 years old.

So far, the Danish Democrats' transport spokesman Kenneth Fredslund Petersen (Æ) is not ready to go, when Boosted asked. But he wants to remove the periodic taxes on all vintage cars in Denmark.

In a motion for resolution, he has asked the government to come up with a bill for this. The speaker's proposal was first considered this week.

However, exempting owners of vintage cars from periodic charges comes at a price. In fact, quite specifically one that can be counted in kroner and øre. That's what Fredslund Petersen writes for Boosted.

– It will cost the state treasury DKK 60 million. kroner when you take everything into account. Or DKK 30 million, if the tax is halved, it says.

However, the Danish Democrats also have a suggestion as to where the money can come from. The state must specifically spend less money if motorists are to be allowed to keep theirs.

– We will find the money by abolishing the Statens Artfonds' honorarium and cutting the grant to the Project Support Committee for Performing Arts, it says.

What has gotten the Transport Minister into trouble are the planned increases in both the green tax and the weight tax. It also affects vintage cars, even if these only cover quite a few kilometers a year.

– I honestly think that the weight tax on our veteran corvettes is a fire tax. Veteran coronets are, after all, Danish cultural heritage on four wheels.

– And when you then raise the weight tax by 36 per cent. for some vintage cars that are very sporadic on the roads; I simply find it difficult to see the point of that.

However, Kenneth Fredslund Petersen believes that rules and exemptions such as in Norway are not realistic to get through the current parliament.

– Basically, this is about the fact that veteran corpsmen are not something we as a society should hide away. It is Danish cultural heritage. And something that we all enjoy in the summer months.
