General Motors has huge problems with the V8 engines used by Cadillac, among others. The cars break down on the assembly line or after just 6 kilometers.
The 6.2-liter V8 engines from General Motors, which are used by Cadillac, among others, have proven to be problematic.
Several engines break down either during production or immediately after delivery. The problems are so massive that there are not enough spare parts to repair them.
Recently, it emerged that a new Cadillac Escalade with the problematic engine died after just six kilometers of driving.
This has prompted the US traffic authority, NHTSA, to get involved in the matter, as several owners have complained about errors and engine failures in brand new cars.
The reports describe sudden and extensive engine problems, in some cases resulting in total engine failure. One of these cases involved an engine that failed after only six kilometers of driving. This engine is now the subject of a mechanical investigation.
A mechanic from the YouTube channel "Dave's Auto Center" has examined the damaged 6.2-liter V8 engine that was previously in a 2023 Cadillac Escalade. In a video, he takes the engine apart.
Even before the mechanic begins the actual examination, part of a connecting rod falls out of the engine.
"This is really bad news," the mechanic said succinctly.
He then continues to disassemble the engine. However, it takes a while, because he finds additional problems. They appear when he examines the pistons.
It turns out that there is a fault with one of the 8 pistons, something the mechanic believes is the cause of the entire engine failure.
The mechanic believes he has found the cause of the problem and concludes that it is likely related to the defective piston.
It's still too early to say anything definitive, as NHTSA has not completed its own investigation. The engine in question is found in several models from Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC.
The large number of engine failures has meant that General Motors' stock of spare parts is empty, making it difficult for the factory to both make new engines and repair those that have already been built.
Serious problems with combustion engines are far from new. In 2018, BMW was fined 77 million Danish kroner for concealing the causes of fires in 50 diesel cars. Problems that are also present in Denmark. Read more about it here .
