EU president in a U-turn – will allow the internal combustion engine

The re-elected president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will still ban the internal combustion engine in 2035. However, it must be with loopholes.

The internal combustion engine is not going anywhere. Not even if, on paper, it will be banned in the EU in 11 years.

The re-elected president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wants to pierce the ban in advance. Among other things. by allowing the use of synthetic fuels also after 2035.

This is written by Automobilwoche .

– I am delighted that the new commission will revise the ban on internal combustion engines, Manfred Weber, chairman of the centre-right EPP alliance, tells the media.

The EU decided in 2023 that in 2035 new internal combustion engines must be banned. Ever since, it has been discussed whether the ban should be zero-tolerance, while others want it lifted completely.

Before she was re-elected, however, Ursula von der Leyen struck a blow for certain exceptions to the ban on petrol and diesel cars.

The next step is a change in the law so that new cars with internal combustion engines are not banned if they can run on synthetic fuels. But there is no danger of that now.

In other words, that it would be a problem for the cars. For example, the Stellantis Group has said that it has already built 28 million cars that can run on synthetic petrol and diesel without problems.

The biggest problem with the synthetic fuel is the price. At present, it is produced on such a small scale that it is prohibitively expensive per unit. litres.

However, demand may increase significantly before too long. As early as 2027, the EU will start introducing CO2 quotas. Something that makes the price of petrol and diesel significantly higher. Read more about it here .
