Although electric cars accounted for 64 percent of the market in Denmark in January, the car type still lags behind other countries.
Denmark is still lagging behind when it comes to electric cars. Electric cars are not as widespread in Denmark as in other countries.
Norway remains far ahead of both Sweden and Denmark. No other country has a similar share of newly registered electric cars.
In January, another record was set in Norway with an electric car share of 96 percent. However, Denmark follows "closely" and takes second place.
Denmark also set a new record in January with 64 percent electric cars. Although there is still some way to go to reach Norway's figures, there has been a significant increase in Denmark.
Sweden has a completely different situation. In January, the electric car share was only 28.5 percent. The highest number of electric cars ever sold on the other side of the Øresund in a January.
However, it is worth noting that back in December 2022, almost 50 percent of new car sales in the country were electric cars. Since then, the market share of electric cars has dropped significantly. Especially after the Swedish authorities dropped all state support for electric cars.
Mobility Sweden, on the other hand, expects that the share of electric cars will increase in 2025. However, the fact that electric cars will occupy more space is not necessarily due to the fact that drivers are most interested in electric cars.
Instead, it should be seen as an expression that car brands need to sell more electric cars to avoid large emissions penalties from the EU.
A brand like Volkswagen, for example, expects to be ready with an electric car for around 150,000 Danish kroner in 2027. Read more about that car here .
– Our assessment is that electric cars will increase and account for 40 percent of new registrations during the year. At the same time, political initiatives are needed to further increase the share of electric cars and keep used electric cars in the country, says Sofia Linder, chief economist for Mobility Sweden.
