100 years of registration tax, which we have rounded up in Denmark, must be enough. This is what the car importers' interest organization believes. But motorists still have to pay, says the director.
It should have been here for six months, but now the registration tax on cars in Denmark has reached the hundred year mark.
The former Liberal politician and current chairman of the car importers' interest body Mobilty Denmark wants to get rid of the tax and force Danish drivers to pay a traffic tax instead.
He writes this in a column for Motor magazine .
– In the slightly longer term, the remaining registration tax should be completely replaced by a congestion charge, which focuses on reducing congestion, while ensuring that the overall taxation of motorists does not become more severe than it is today.

The Danes therefore still have to pay sky-high taxes to drive around in cars. Even if they – as Mobilty Denmark prefers to see it – only run on electricity.
Incidentally, it must take place in smaller electric cars than today, because according to the director it does not make sense that: "large, energy-demanding electric cars pay the same as small electric cars".
In fact, Mads Rorvig believes that the Danes may lose interest in electric cars completely if the taxes increase just the tiniest bit compared to the current level. And he is not the only one to share that attitude.
Also at Dansk Industri's department for the car industry – DI Bilbranchen – there is a fear that Danish motorists will turn their backs on electric cars with taxes on them.
This is, among other things, gone in Germany, where the government is now feeling the pressure to partially reintroduce state support for electric cars after an 8-month-long collapse in sales. The same considerations are made in Sweden.
Elsewhere, however, it is adamant that owners of electric cars must also pay their share of the bill. In the Netherlands, from 1 January 2025, the phasing out of all state subsidies for the electric car will begin.
And in the Canadian province of Alberta, the politicians believe that the electric cars wear out the roads so much that the owners have to shell out money to destroy the asphalt. Read more about it here .
