BMW demands the ban on the internal combustion engine stopped

Stop the ban on the internal combustion engine or become dependent on China, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said.

The Paris Motor Show is in full swing, and BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has spent some of the time in the spotlight.

But on stage in Paris, the director had one demand in particular – stop the ban on the internal combustion engine. And if the EU is not willing to do so, you have to compromise and become dependent on China.

Because even though BMW is actually one of the few car brands that is able to increase sales of electric cars, the director has no doubt that the 2035 ban must be completely rolled back.

– A correction of the electric car target of 100 percent from 2035 would make European car manufacturers less dependent on China for batteries, said Oliver Zipse at the motor show in Paris.

And the attitude – especially in relation to the threat from China – Zipse is not alone in standing by. Several analysts point out that the European car industry is being overtaken internally by the Chinese.

In an attempt to put a damper on the Chinese, the EU has adopted a punitive tariff on all electric cars built in China. But it hardly seems to have any effect. Even Tesla, which has the Model 3 built in China, has just lowered the price of even the same car. Blue. here in Denmark.

– To maintain the successful course, a strictly technology-neutral path within the political framework is decisive, says BMW's director.

BMW's response to competition from the Chinese is a multi-pronged strategy. Literally like that. The Germans want to build cars with internal combustion engines, electric motors and cars that run on alternative fuels. For example, when burning hydrogen or synthetic petrol/diesel.

Toyota has the same thoughts. Here, board chairman Akio Toyoda is actually so firm in his skepticism towards electric cars that he does not want to believe that electric cars will ever get more than 30 percent of the global car market. Read more about it here .
