Algeramt Dodge Viper rows the earth for the first time in 28 years

For 28 years, a car dealer in the American city of Henderson in Kentucky has had a Dodge Viper hanging above the shop as an eye-catcher. Now the car, which is full of algae, has been stripped down.

In the American city of Henderson in Kentucky, for 28 years a Dodge Viper has towered over a car dealer's business. The messy roadster has served as an eye-catcher, but now it is back with asphalt under the wheels.

– The lady here is getting a makeover. If you see the Viper coming down today, it's to clean it and give it a new coat of paint! We promise that the Viper will soon be back and sitting high in the sky, writes the car dealer on Facebook.

The pictures of the 1996 Viper getting used to life at a lower altitude remind us why most drivers don't leave their cars outside for years.

The red lacquer has faded from the sun's rays. In fact, it peels off. The headlights are green from algae attack, and so are the windows.

One thing that is not pictured is the cabin. But under the bonnet, wind and weather have left their clear marks on the 8-litre V10 engine. In fact, it looks more like scarecrow than anything else.

Large amounts of straw behind the Viper's front wheel indicate that birds have taken up residence in the car for years. The block itself is covered in something that is more brown than anything else. In any case, it is difficult to see the original root cylinder head.

But the fact that there is an engine at all probably surprises most people. Many will probably expect such a flashback to be 'just' an empty shell. But not here.

We don't really get an answer to why the car has ended up on top of the car dealer's buildings. But the comment trail on Facebook is flowing with offers.

One user believes, for example, that the car must be one of the early prototypes that Chrysler just had to get rid of. But Alec Girvin, as cited by Carscoops, rejects that interpretation.

According to Girvin, he was working for the dealer when the Viper was lifted in the air way back in 1996. Back then, the car had only a short 19 kilometers on it.
