Giant car brands confirm that they will merge

Nissan and Honda will now work together to beat Tesla. This must be done through platform and software sharing.

At a press event in Tokyo, Nissan and Honda confirm that the two car brands will join forces to make electric cars.

The goal is to beat Tesla and gain market share. The Chinese market in particular is important, says the Japanese.

The partners write this in a press release .

The plans are currently only in the initial stages. Here, the car brands will investigate how they can jointly develop both electric cars, parts for electric cars and software.

According to the Reuters news agency, Nissan in particular is open to working with Honda. And not just on the domestic market in Japan, but globally.

– We cannot win as long as we stick to conventional knowledge and a traditional approach, Nissan's managing director, Makoto Uchida, said in the press release.

The Honda-Nissan alliance may, from the automotive industry's point of view, seem strange, since Nissan is already part of Renault and vice versa.

Nissan and Renault are also already working together on at least one electric car. The new Renault 5 E-tech will eventually also become the next Nissan Micra. The cars will even be built at the same factory in France.

Conversely, Renault has pulled away slightly from Nissan by entering into an agreement for millions of internal combustion engines and factories in several countries with Volvo's owner Geely.

According to Reuters, however, Nissan's managing director denies that the new collaboration with Honda will affect the relationship with Renault.

Honda is also already working with several other companies on electric cars. Among other things, with the PlayStation manufacturer Sony.

Like Honda, the brand builds cars on General Motors technology for American customers. So the whole thing is something of a mixed general store.
