Can you see it? Ford steals VW's solution in new electric car

Ford has facelifted the Mustang Mach-E. The model now gets a heat pump as standard and a new location for the gear selector on the steering wheel. It's actually a VW thing.

Ford has updated the electric car Mustang Mach-E. Not just with software. It's completely physical in a facelift.

The most significant changes include a standard-fitted heat pump and a new location for the gear selector.

The heat pump is now standard equipment on all Mach-E models. For some drivers, it may be an important addition. But it also makes the car more complicated and more expensive to repair.

The addition of a heat pump does have a consequence, however. The space in the car's front storage compartment, known as the 'frunk', is reduced. The previously spacious frunk becomes less practical.

Another significant change is found inside the cabin. Ford has moved the gear selector, as customers have complained about the placement of the gear selector in the first versions of the car.

The gear selector is no longer in the center console. It is now located as a stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Cabin changes and Ford Mach-E operation

At the same time, the functions for turn signals and windscreen wipers have been combined and are now operated via a single multifunction lever on the left side of the steering column.

The new gear selector is operated by pushing the stalk up or down. It's a solution familiar from car brands like Mercedes and Tesla.

This differs from the solution in Volkswagen's ID models and the VW-based Ford Explorer and Capri. Those models have a gear selector that must be turned.

The move of the gear selector frees up space in the center console, which Ford says provides better storage options for loose items.

According to Ford, more space in the center console has been a request from current Mach-E owners.

Heat pump as standard and several new colors

It is especially loyal Mach-E customers who switch from an older model to the new one who will notice the difference in operation.

In addition to the technical changes, Ford is also introducing three new color options for the 2025 model, giving prospective buyers more choices.

Overall, the updates for the 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E are focused on practical improvements. The standard heat pump and a new gear selector location are the main news.

Ford is sticking to the argument that moving the gear selector creates more usable space in the cabin. Whether Ford can sell the car is another matter.

There are indications that Ford is having more than a hard time selling electric cars. Not only has it had to cut production of the VW-developed Capri and Explorer models.
