Volvo ES90 leaked before the premiere – drives 700 kilometers

The Volvo ES90 will be officially unveiled tomorrow. But photos of the new sedan have already been leaked. The car is said to have a range of 700 kilometers on a single charge.

The Volvo ES90 has been showcased online a day before its official premiere.

The new electric sedan from Volvo is expected to be presented on Wednesday, March 5, at an event near Stockholm.

However, images of the car have already been leaked online. These types of leaks are common, but are becoming more common. For example, the new Audi A6 was shown online shortly before its official premiere.

The Volvo ES90 is designed as a streamlined sedan, if you ask Volvo.

The front of the car features the distinctive "Thor's Hammer" headlights, something the Chinese-owned brand equipped its cars with back in 2014.

The new car looks similar but is lighter than its sister model EX90

Furthermore, the new sedan shares certain design features with its predecessor, the S90. However, with the very significant difference that the electric car has a shorter rear end.

Like the EX90 SUV, the ES90 is equipped with a Lidar sensor on the roof. However, the sedan shape can push the Cd value (air resistance over the car, ed.) down somewhat compared to the EX90.

Another thing the ES90 is not expected to inherit is the EX90's weight. Although both cars are technically closely related, Volvo has reportedly managed to keep the weight below the SUV's 2,700 kilos.

The lower weight also helps give the ES90 an official WLTP range of 700 kilometers in the all-wheel drive version with a 106 kWh battery.

It is expected that a rear-wheel drive with an even longer range, if possible, will become part of the model range later.

With 800-volt technology and so-called adaptive charging, the ES90 can be charged with a power of 350 kW. According to Volvo, the battery can be charged for 300 kilometers of driving in 10 minutes.

The 800-volt system also makes the car a bit lighter, because Volvo has been able to fit lighter electric motors into the car. So it shouldn't be noticeable that the car has become 5 meters longer. Not even though it is longer than its predecessor.

Anders Bell, Volvo's technical director, believes that the 800-volt technology in particular will benefit customers.

– Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification.

– It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster and go further on a single charge, he says in a press release .

The ES90 is built on the SPA2 platform, also used in the EX90. The car uses the same core computing technology as the EX90, including a new, faster Nvidia processor.

However, Volvo is expected to switch to the SPA3 platform with the upcoming EX60 model. Furthermore, a problem in the EX90 could end up costing the car brand billions of kroner. Read more about it here .
