Mercedes-AMG regrets electric car plan – builds new V8 engine

Not everything has to run on electricity. And now Mercedes-AMG is building a replacement for the brand's 4-liter V8 engine with twin turbos. That wasn't the plan.

Mercedes is preparing a new generation of V8 engines that combine the muscle power of the combustion engine with electrification. This means that more hybrids are on their way into the model range.

It is part of a larger plan to expand both Mercedes' and AMG's model range and offer a wider range of powertrains.

In fact, Mercedes will build fewer electric cars to save the business. Read more about that decision right here .

Mercedes-AMG has also announced what it thinks the future in Affalterbach should look like. One of the most notable is the development of a new generation of V8 engines.

The new V8 engine will be "electrified". What exactly this entails has not yet been announced. There is speculation whether it will be a plug-in hybrid or some kind of mild-hybrid system. That is, without a cord.

Regardless of which solution is chosen, it is clear that Mercedes-AMG wants to combine the traditional V8 engine with some form of battery. The goal is to create engines that are both powerful and more efficient.

This is what Top Gear writes.

The current hybrid V8, used in the fastest AMG GT and SL models, combines a 4.0-liter biturbo engine with an electric motor and a battery. It produces a whopping 805 horsepower.

In addition to the new V8 engine, Mercedes-AMG has also confirmed that it is working on "dedicated high-performance electric models based on AMG.EA". AMG.EA is the performance division's very own platform. And in fact, the first from AMG ever.

This means that we can expect even more electric AMG models in the future, even if combustion engines still have to be built by hand.

Mercedes has also confirmed that a smaller version of the G-Class is on the way. Back in 2023, Mercedes boss Ola Källenius stated that the "little G" would be "competent" and "instantly recognizable as a G-Class."

Mercedes has also made it clear that they will use a "coherent, status-oriented design" across their entire model range.

Customers will be able to choose a model and then choose which engine will be in the car. Källenius has also said that the most daring models are over. In the future, 'a Mercedes must look like a Mercedes'.

The electric car has not been completely forgotten, however. An all-electric E-Class is on the way. The same is true for the upcoming CLA.

However, that car is also available with a hybrid-assisted 4-cylinder combustion engine from China. This is due to the collaboration that Volvo's Chinese owner Geely has with, among others, Renault. The collaboration is called Horse Powertrains.

But back to Mercedes. Because it's not just the V8 engine that will survive. In selected, but few markets, the Germans intend to keep the V12 engine alive in the top models.

The future of Mercedes-AMG looks exciting. With the new V8 engine and upcoming electric models, there is definitely something for everyone.
