Car giant lays off 9,000 – now the factories are closing

Nissan, which this week tore up a merger with Honda, is to lay off 9,000 employees. And now the brand does not rule out closing more factories in the UK.

Nissan needs to save 18 billion kroner. The car brand has already said it will cost 9,000 employees their jobs and at least 3 factory closures. However, more may be on the way.

This is what Autocar writes.

For now, the Japanese will not rule out the possibility that two more factories in England will also have to turn the key. All because the merger negotiations with Honda have collapsed.

– Due to the company's recent capabilities and a changing environment, it is necessary that we explore all options without any fear of compromise.

"Only in this way can we carry out a deeper restructuring of the company," said Nissan director Makoto Uchida when news of the collapse in negotiations with Honda became public this week.

Nissan makes it clear that the car brand must find the 18 billion in savings as early as the 2026 financial year.

It was only two months ago that British politicians believed that Nissan was in England 'to stay for the long haul'.

According to the North East Combined Authority, Nissan has committed to building electric versions of the Qashqai, Leaf and Juke models at the brand's factory in Sunderland, where 6,000 people are currently on the payroll.
