101-year-old Thomas has renewed his driving license: "Because I can"

Thomas "Ed" Davis has no intention of putting away his car keys or his driving license. On the contrary, the 101-year-old man has just had his driving license renewed.

Thomas "Ed" Davis is not like most people. Not only is he a full 101 years old, he has just had his driving license renewed.

And why was that? Well, the older gentleman just wanted to see if he could. And he could.

He tells Wnem that.

Davis, who lives in the US state of Texas, has had his driver's license renewed every other year for the past two years. But this time, he was a bit hesitant before applying to extend his driving privileges.

At the local engine office, the challenge was also something to be overlooked. At least if you have eyes that aren't good enough. But Thomas Davis does.

– They asked if I could read what was on the new driving license. And when I said yes, I stood there with it (in my hand, ed.).

The 101-year-old is not the only 'very old' driver in the family. Davis' brother is 103 years old and still drives around. Thomas Davis himself has no intention of giving up his driving license just yet.

However, he mostly uses it to get around his local area and to help out in his carpentry business. He says he does this every day.

There are no blemishes on the driver's license record when it comes to the 101-year-old's behavior behind the wheel. Apart from a single speeding ticket almost many years ago, Thomas Davis has stayed on the right side of the traffic law.

The old Texan is far from the only one who enjoys driving even in her old age. Japanese Naoko Nishimoto is a spring bunny in that regard, even though she is 80 years old.

It was only this year, however, that she put her driving license on the shelf. For the past 25 years, she has spent behind the wheel of a Mazda RX-7. A car she sold back to the local Mazda dealer – to whom else? Read Naoko Nishimoto's story here .

Or what about June's story? The South African grandmother turned 87 in 2020. But that didn't stop her from driving her Nissan 200SX every single day.

She has had the car since it was new in the summer of 1991. It was her husband who said at the time that she could choose freely from all the shelves. And so it ended up being a coupé-shaped Nissan.
