43 percent of drivers fail the same part of the driving test

New figures from Norway show that 43 percent of drivers fail the same part of the driving test. Authorities call this worrying and point in particular to a lack of technical knowledge.

Many people fail their driving test, and a large proportion of them fail the theory test. As many as 43 percent of those who take the driving test fail the theory test, according to figures from the Norwegian authorities.

This is reported by the Norwegian news agency NBT .

According to the Danish Public Roads Administration, the high rate of dumps is often due to a lack of knowledge about the car's components, including the battery, and basic traffic rules.

– It is far too bad, and it leads to a huge waste of both our time and the candidates' time and money, says department director Heidi-Kristin Herbs at the Danish Public Roads Administration.

Although many fail the theory test, the practical driving test looks better. Here, 78 percent pass. The Danish Public Roads Administration conducted 148,531 driving tests in 2024.

To improve the passing rate of the theory test, it is important that driving school students focus on learning about the different parts of the car, such as the battery, and the associated safety procedures. In addition, they must have a solid knowledge of the traffic rules.

– We would have liked to see this proportion much lower. I would therefore encourage everyone who is going to take the theory test to come very well prepared, says Herbst.

Those who fail the theory test have to wait longer before they can take the test again. This lengthens the process of getting a driving license and can be frustrating for prospective drivers.

However, the Danes are not much better than the Norwegians behind the wheel. At least not when they are brand new drivers. Figures from the Danish Transport Agency, which took over the driving license area from the police in October 2021, show that almost half of the drivers in Copenhagen fail the driving test the first time.

In comparison, only 24 percent of East Jutland residents fail their first driving test. But it could actually be even worse. In 2023, for example, a young Englishman failed his theory test a whopping 59 times, according to Sky News.

– There is no doubt that it is a difficult test, and it is impressive how the students fight to pass it.

– It's easy to underestimate the theory test and think that you can pass it without making any effort, but that's far from the case, says Camilla Benitz, director of the AA Driving School organization.
