Will punish people in old cars – "They must pay DKK 25,000."

If the older cars are to be removed from the roads, it is not enough to raise the scrap premium. The owners must be punished financially for driving around in them, says a new proposal.

Here at home, several of the oldest diesel cars are already banned in the biggest cities and in Frederiksberg.

But it is not enough with the so-called environmental zones. If the oldest cars are really to be removed from the roads, their owners must generally be punished much more severely.

Ronny Svensson, who is a fleet expert at one of Sweden's largest company car companies, Ynnor, thinks so. He is especially longing for the scrap premium that the Swedes have just set up to 10,000 kroner (6,500 Danish kroner, ed.).

It is not enough at all. And from several other sources it sounds like no new and working car on Swedish roads is worth so little. Read more about it here.

Instead, people living in the oldest cars pay much more in road tax. What we at home call periodic charges. This will, to a greater extent, force more people to scrap their current, perhaps slightly too old, car.

– Raise the road traffic tax on cars older than 20 years by DKK 25,000. If that happens, many older cars will disappear, he tells Carup .

The Swedish government can then use the money to raise the scrap premium for the oldest cars to exactly the same amount. So 16,360 Danish kroner.

At home, the periodic tax does not only increase for the oldest cars. All drivers must pay more every six months, regardless of how new or old their cars are. In fact, we are right now in the midst of an unprecedented large increase in the area.

Towards 2026, property taxes will increase by more than 36 percent. Even the vintage cars, which only drive a few kilometers a year, are penalized with higher taxes. Read more about it here .
