We are enormously better than Tesla, says car director

Lucid Motors loses money on every single car they sell and have sold to date. Still, the director believes that the car brand is enormously better than Tesla.

Lucid believes their cars are vastly superior to Tesla.

The small American brand, even though they are losing money on every single car, has just announced that they will spend a lot of money on several 'cheaper models' in order to compete directly with Tesla.

Lucid's director, Peter Rawlinson, says in a new episode of the Wall Street Journal's podcast " Bold Names " that the brand's current models, Air and Gravity, are only a very small part of the overall plan.

Rawlinson also rejects the idea that sales of electric cars are generally in reverse gear. Instead, he believes that it is about the advances in technology 'just not being that great at the moment'.

But he is wrong. Because even the Danish car importers' association, Mobility Denmark, has this week sent out figures showing that electric car sales have declined.

And if you look in Lucid's own order books, there is not much to cheer about either. In fact, the brand has sold just 1,944 cars in the past three months. And that is actually an increase of 33 percent.

On the other hand, Tesla sold 'just' 1,669 copies of the Model S in the US during the same period. This is a drop of a whopping 47 percent.

According to Elektrec, the Porsche Taycan and Mercedes-Benz EQS have also been overtaken by a significant margin.

After the launch of the large SUV Gravity in the new year, Lucid also has plans for another SUV. This time one in the class for medium-sized cars.

– We are obviously a Porsche and Mercedes competitor now. But with the medium-sized SUV, we become a direct competitor to Tesla, says Rawlinson.

Although Lucid has plans to move into a more affordable segment, Rawlinson refuses to aim for a decidedly cheap segment – albeit with a small opening to do so anyway, indirectly.

Rawlinson also expresses skepticism about self-driving cars. He believes that the technology still has a long way to go, because it is ready to be implemented on a large scale.
