Volvo EX90 named world's best luxury car

The electric car Volvo EX90 wins the World Car Awards ahead of strong competitors – the safety and design in particular impress the international jury.

The Volvo EX90 has just been honored with the title of “World Luxury Car” at this year’s World Car Awards. The electric SUV impresses with its high level of safety, refined interior and Scandinavian design language, says the jury.

The award was announced in connection with the New York International Auto Show, and 96 automotive journalists from 30 countries selected the winners after extensive test drives.

The EX90 is the most impressive new luxury car on the market, according to the jury. The 7-seat SUV has been praised for its comfort and the cabin's exclusive choice of materials, among other things.

One of the key elements is the so-called “Nordico” upholstery – a leather-free material made from organic and recycled raw materials from Scandinavian forests.

The cabin is also among the quietest in its class, and the lighting reproduces a spectrum close to natural daylight. This, together with backlit wood panels, contributes to a relaxing atmosphere that Volvo highlights as part of its vision of modern luxury.

The exterior design also follows the principle that form follows function. This means that the front is aerodynamically designed and the wing mirrors, windows and handles are integrated into a smooth line. This reduces wind resistance and improves range.

High safety – and LiDAR in the front of the Volvo EX90

Safety is one of the Volvo EX90's greatest strengths. The car is equipped with cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors and an advanced LiDAR unit. The latter is integrated into the roof, just above the windshield, where it has the best visibility. Together, the sensors create a detailed picture of the surroundings and help prevent accidents.

Volvo calls the EX90 “the safest car they’ve ever built,” and with the award from the World Car Awards, it seems the industry agrees.

Room for seven – and plenty of luggage in the EX90

The EX90 is a true 7-seat SUV, yet it has a surprisingly large boot space. With all seats up, there is 324 litres of boot space.

Folding down the third row of seats increases the space to 697 liters. This places the EX90 at the heavy end of the SUV scale, also in terms of practicality.

This is the third time Volvo has won an award at the World Car Awards. Previously, the XC60 won the title of “World Car of the Year” in 2018, while the compact EX30 was named “World Urban Car” in 2024.

Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson says of the EX90's victory:

“We are delighted to see the EX90 getting the recognition it truly deserves. It was up against some tough competition and this award proves that the EX90 appeals to some of the most demanding customers around the world,” he says.
