Volvo claps back – caught in diesel cheating with several models

Volvo Cars has cheated on the scale when it comes to the emission output of a number of the brand's models. Specifically, 5 models cheat on the scale.

Volvo is the latest in a long line of car brands that have had to recall cars in recent years because the cars pollute too much.

It was the Dutch authorities who discovered in a spot check that as many as five Volvo models pollute too much. These are: Volvo S90, V90, V90 Cross Country as well as XC60 and XC90.

All the cars were built between 13 November 2017 and 23 August 2020. This is what Vi Bilägare writes after contacting the Dutch authorities.

– The recall applies to cars that are part of the same model family, because they all have the same diesel engine, says Thérèse de Vroomen from RDW's communications department to Vi Bilägare .

Volvo itself does not have much to say about the recall based on the Dutch discovery. In any case, the car brand will not disclose how much the cars' pollution is above the limit. The same applies to RDW.

However, Volvo in Sweden would like to explain how it intends to solve the problem. Namely with a software update for the engine. According to the recall, it is the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) that is too high.

Volkswagen had the same problem when the dieselgate scandal started rolling in September 2015. And in fact, the matter is still plaguing Volkswagen. Read more about it here.

Whether Volvo will intervene in future recalls of cars with a diesel engine is difficult to predict. But the brand itself has made the probability somewhat less. Earlier this year, Volvo built the brand's last ever passenger car with a diesel engine.
