Volkswagen blames EVs for ID.7 decision

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.7, which is the same size as the Passat, should have actually been out in North America. But now the car brand regrets it.

Both here at home and in China, motorists have been able to get their hands on a new Volkswagen ID.7 since autumn 2023. But that is not the case in North America.

And now Volkswagen is completely postponing the launch of the model. Officially due to 'market dynamics'. In other words, a disappointing sale.

At the general launch of the ID.7 last spring, Volkswagen said it was determined to bring the car to the U.S. by 2024. Now, that decision is no longer so firm. Actually not at all.

This is what Volkswagen writes in a press release .

Besides a market that is no longer buying electric cars at a furious pace, another stumbling block for the ID.7 could be the fact that the car cannot get any tax rebate in the US.

The cars that Volkswagen will sell in the US are actually built at the Emden factory in Germany. And tax/tax rebates on electric cars are only available if/when the individual car is built in the USA.

In our own latitudes, the state of affairs is also behind Volkswagen. All in all, the brand did not expect that motorists will now have hybrid cars in a much larger amount. But the brand must recognize that. Read more about it here.

Back in the US, the ID.4 is the only electric car in the Volkswagen importer's model range. The same applies to Canada. But even though the ID.7 is now an unanswered question, Volkswagen remains adamant that it will take the ID.Buzz minibus with it to North America. And that in the course of the 4th quarter.

Here at home, ID.7 is not going super well either. During the first three months of the year, Volkswagen only managed to sell 171 copies of the car. In comparison, Tesla has been able to sell almost 1,400 versions of the rival Model 3.
