Used test: Mercedes C43 – an AMG brother from the past

If you are looking for the sound of a delicious V8 and need to buy your next car on a tight budget, then this Mercedes C43 AMG with 306 hp is absolutely perfect. The price for this vintage super sedan is only DKK 125,000.

Combining fun and practicality can be a challenge if you're a car nut and don't have an unlimited budget. However, there are some options if you dig deeper and think a little differently. The car in the pictures in front of you is one of those options. Yes, it has terrible fuel economy. Yes, it looks like an abandoned taxi. And yes, you get on first name terms with your mechanic. But try to hear the positives: This is a 306-horsepower sedan with room for four people, a delicious soundtrack from a rumbling V8 and a price tag of DKK 125,000. It's hard not to be tempted, writes Bil Magasinet . The new model was dubbed the C-Class to the outside world, while internally at Mercedes it was called the W202. The outer lines were tight, and the whole car was extremely compact, which was also intended, since it was the brand's smallest model. To begin with, however, there were no big surprises under the bonnet, but then Mercedes' new tuning department stepped in. They started with a body-ready C280, which they took apart, heavily tuned, reassembled and slapped on a few C36 AMG logos. The model had 280 hp, and had to compete against the BMW M3 of the time, which was, however, ahead in power. However, AMG was unstoppable, so they played on. Under the hood was a 4.3-liter V8 engine, which with the help of classic tuning tricks was pushed to 306 hp. The first time I put weight on my right foot and feel a click in the big toe that activates the gearbox's kickdown function, I get a shock. The needle in the tachometer tightens up while the rear car settles down so hard that it feels like I'm sitting in a steep dragster. There is not much foaling in the steering gear, but I still manage to keep the crew on the right course. A heavy crank struggles to swing in revolutions, and to the sound of the roaring V8 we are suddenly up to far too high a speed. I hit the brakes hard, where I get another surprise. It feels as if the slices are the size of the lids from jam jars. And that is not the car's only challenge. Cornering is not exactly the C43's lifeblood, and the steering gear and undercarriage do not in any way deliver a dynamic experience. What you need a C43 AMG for is traffic light duels and high speed trips on the Autobahn. Without a doubt, this is where the car belongs.
