Millions of cars have been built in Turkey. The country's own car brands, however, have little to do with it. Now a new one is going after Tesla's customers.
Togg may not tell you anything.
But the name covers a Turkish car manufacturer with state support behind it. The brand, which was founded just 5 years ago, now considers itself ready to compete with Tesla.
Right now, however, the Turks only have one model on the program. Namely the SUV T10X. That's even though Togg, which is a contraction of 'Turkey's Automobile Joint Venture Group', presented a sedan called the T10F in January.
A car that the Turks, like the T10X, hired Pininfarina SpA, now owned by Indian Mahindra, to design.

However, Togg has not managed to sell many cars. Even so, the brand can already call itself the biggest in Turkey. At least when it comes to electric cars.
But not much is needed here either. Sales of electric cars are very slow in Turkey. In fact, electric cars made up just 6.1 percent of new car sales in the first quarter. And that's why Togg can take the lead with just 4,145 cars.

In comparison, according to De Danske Bilimportorer, electric cars made up 41 percent of the market in Denmark in the same period.
Togg himself says that they want to go to Europe in the course of 2024. But at the beginning of April there were still no rumors about exactly when or how.
The Turkish government actively supports Togg. The government with President Erdogan has, among other things, guaranteed that the public sector will buy 30,000 cars from the brand before 2035.
In addition, Turkey's government has lowered the car brand's tax payment and given it low-cost loans. The land on which Togg's factory is located has also been made available to the brand free of charge.
However, the massive state subsidy could become a huge problem for Togg's plans for a European launch. At least if the EU enforces the same set of rules that the Chinese car brands are currently being threatened with. Read more about it here .
