Toyota sheds light on new MR2 with petrol engine

The plan is to compete with Mazda and the small MX-5. So now Toyota wants to revive the MR2 name for a small sports car with a petrol engine.

It may well be that the top model in the form of the current Supra is on its way out. But now something suggests that MR2 is on its way.

In any case, Japanese Best Car writes that the Toyota top has given ample light to the fact that the engineers can develop a sports car with a petrol engine.

If it gets the MR2 name, it will be the first time since 2007 that Toyota has had something like this on the program. And should you have forgotten what the MR2 stands for, here is a brief summary: two seats, rear-wheel drive and central engine.

Toyota chairman and former director Akio Toyoda has long spoken of his desire to see the car brand's "three brothers": MR2, Celica and Supra revived.

So far it has only happened to one. And that in a collaboration with BMW, which now seems to be coming to an end.

On the other hand, there have already been rumors that Toyota would like to buy access to BMW's technology – specifically the three-liter inline six – for a sixth edition of the Supra.

In that context, it is worth noting that it has also been rumored that the Japanese will build an all-electric sports car. The FT-SE concept was even designed by a Dane. Read more about it here.

However, the production-ready version of the car is expected – as is typical for the fate of concept cars – to be much more muted than what Toyota has already shown.

Toyota is far from the only car brand with historic model names lying in the drawer, which are now being put away. Most recently, it has come to light that the Stellantis group has chosen to revive a model name from an otherwise dead car brand. Read more about it here .
