The Red Bull RB17 has a V10 engine and 1,200 horsepower

The Red Bull RB17 is not a Formula 1 car. But the people behind it say the V10 engine in it is at least as fast.

The Red Bull RB17 is in many ways legendary Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey's farewell to the team he has worked for since 2006.

Newey said earlier this year that he will leave Red Bull after this season. But he gets to see his hypercar become a reality.

The RB17 uses a V10 engine developed by Cosworth. With it, the entire glory weighs just 900 kilos. Among other things because almost everything apart from the engine is built in carbon fibre.

For the time being, Red Bull will not say anything about how much torque there is in the hypercar. But they would like to say that the engine produces 1,200 horsepower and takes a staggering 15,000 revolutions per minute.

According to Newey, the RB17 is at least as fast around Formula 1 tracks as the racing cars themselves.

The top speed must otherwise be found somewhere above 350 km/h. The bad news is that unfortunately only 50 examples of the car will be built.

The RB17 embodies everything we stand for: undeniable engine power, speed and elegance. It is very versatile in its applications.

And we took care to design it with two seats so that the thrill of cruising at F1 speeds can be enjoyed with a friend or partner, said Adrian Newey during the unveiling of the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

What the RB17 costs is not yet known. But it will hardly be a cheap pleasure when production begins in 2025. On the other hand, some track days are automatically included in the purchase, so that customers have the opportunity to test their enormous investment.

It is not the first time that neither Red Bull nor Adrian Newey have developed a car outside of Formula 1. Still, the engineer does not think that the RB17 should be compared to, for example, the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which was developed in 2016.

– There are many things in this car that the Valkyrie does not have. It has interior storage space, it has luggage space for two helmets and two bags, Adrian Newey tells Autocar .
