The police will be allowed to impound cars that make noise

Right now it is impossible for them. But the police in Malmo want the legislation changed so that they can impound cars that make too much noise.

The residents of the Swedish city of Malmo have this summer in particular complained about cars making too much noise. And it is far from the first time.

But now the city's police chief has also had enough. Because, according to him, it is worse than ever because of cars making noise in the city.

This is written by the newspaper Sydsvenskan .

According to the police, many of the cars that make too much noise have already been illegally modified. They want to get rid of that with an amendment to the Swedish law.

– In August alone, we took care of ten choir cards on Bergsgatan. And we see that it doesn't make much of a difference. It continues as usual, and it makes my police officers frustrated, says Mathias Nilsson to Sydsvenskan.

Today it is the case that the Swedish police cannot take a car, just because the individual officer thinks that the car is making too much noise.

What the police want to be allowed to do is to impound the car without further ado and only afterwards have a technical assessment made of whether the car is actually making too much noise.

A solution that has been inspired by colleagues in England. Here, cars are seized in advance if the police believe that too much noise is coming from the exhaust. The Swedish police will also be allowed to do that.

– We discussed with them how they use their legislation, and in that we have found some gold nuggets that we now propose to be used at home, says Mathias Nilsson to Sydsvenskan.

However, the police chief in Malmo does not believe that the problem with the noisy cars is isolated to his police district. Instead, it is something that several Swedish cities struggle with. For the same reason, the police hope that they will get more support to get the law changed.

In Denmark, the police have slightly different options. Parts from a car can both be seized or retained. However, it is not unheard of or rarely seen to get stalls and inspection calls when it is assessed that their cars are 'unlawfully parked' as stated in the legislation.
