The Minister of Taxation will force the law on electric cars through

Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund (S) wants to force a law on electric cars through in the new year. It would be more attractive to choose between petrol and diesel cars.

Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund (S) believes that 2024 will be the year when the sale of electric cars overtakes the sale of diesel and petrol cars in Denmark for the first time ever.

That is why he also wants to spend the first days of the new year forcing through a new law that will make it more attractive to choose between petrol and diesel cars.

This appears in a press release from the Ministry of Taxation.

– I am concerned that we ensure that Danes across geography and income groups have an incentive to choose the electric car in the coming years.

– So I will come in the spring to take the first steps on how we can do just that. I look forward to putting even more energy into that work," says Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund.

According to the Ministry of Taxation, the Danes have their 'foot on the accelerator' when it comes to electric cars. The latest figures also show that at the end of November, electric cars accounted for 62 percent of car sales in this country.

However, neither the ministry nor the tax minister will comment on why. But in Denmark, electric cars are significantly supported by the state. In fact, there is no registration tax on the vast majority of electric cars in this country.

That only comes when the price rises above DKK 435,000. And even if that scale breaks down to DKK 417,000 in 2025, there is still political will to keep a hand under electric cars.

The same is the case in Norway. Or that is, both and. Because at the same time as the Norwegians want to raise certain taxes on electric cars, they have asked for permission to extend the scheme that exempts electric cars from VAT.

Back in Denmark, several steps have recently been taken that push petrol and diesel cars even further. This week, all of the country's 98 municipalities were allowed to ban all cars with internal combustion engines from 1 January 2025. Read more about it here .
