The government will ban summer tires in snowy weather

The government would not really interfere with which tires the Danes' cars drive around on. But now comes the bill that prohibits anything other than winter tires in snowy weather.

The government has changed its position and will now introduce a ban on the use of tires other than winter tires when it snows.

It must prevent situations where cars and trucks lose traction due to unsuitable tyres.

The bill, which the government will send to parliament on Friday, stipulates that carriages must be equipped with suitable tires when there is snow, ice or slush on the roads.

Failure to comply with the rules can result in fines of DKK 1,000 per person. deck. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen (V) explains that the purpose of the law is to improve safety in winter traffic.

The Social Democrats' transport spokesman, Thomas Jensen, points out that the proposal harmonizes with the rules in countries such as Germany and Sweden.

– It is the driver's duty to wear suitable tires in the winter when there is snow, ice and slush. If you don't have it, you can be fined, he says.

Jensen also emphasizes that the current regulations do not require winter tires, but that the law will in future require tires that suit the road conditions.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Transport launched an analysis to investigate how both cars and trucks could get a better grip on slippery roads.

The Swedish Transport Agency and other actors were involved in the work, which was initiated after several days of challenging winter weather that created chaos for motorists throughout the country.

The consultation phase, which has now begun, gives authorities and organizations the opportunity to submit comments and observations on the proposed draft law. This is an important part of the process, because the bill can be passed.

With the proposed change, it is made clear that it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that the corvette has the correct tires fitted when the weather requires it. The government hopes that the new rules will contribute to fewer accidents and smoother traffic conditions during the winter months.
