The 10 best-selling cars in Denmark are all electric cars

Danes don't exclusively buy electric cars. But for the first time ever, the entire top 10 on the sales lists consists only of electric cars.

Mobility Denmark's figures show a big increase in electric car sales in Denmark. Director Mads Rorvig sees the trend, but previously mentioned the need for a 'whip' for green transition.

Sales of electric cars in Denmark continue to increase significantly. New figures from Mobility Denmark for the first quarter of 2025 show sales of 24,540 electric cars.

Director Mads Rorvig comments on the development, which he has previously had strong opinions about. The number has increased from just over 15,000 in the first quarter of 2024.

Mobility Denmark compiles lists of newly registered passenger cars. The lists are divided by car model and provide an overview of the market. They show a clear trend over recent years.

The number of electric car models has increased from 2023 to 2025. This is clearly seen in the sales figures for the first quarter of the year. Here, electric cars make up the entire top ten list of best-selling models.

Mads Rorvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark, notes this development. He says he has never seen anything like it before.

Electric car sales and green transition

Rorvig sees the current development as positive for the green transition. He expresses joy at the Danes' choice.

– The fact that more Danes choose to buy an electric car is good for the green transition, he says.

– And we are happy that we can also sell some of the cars that we have developed and produced." This shows satisfaction with both sales and conversion.

At the same time, Mads Rorvig has previously expressed a different point of view. Back in 2023, he spoke about the need for more than just incentives. He believed that the carrot in the form of lower taxes was not enough.

At the time, he said that more was needed. Danes needed to be more strongly influenced to choose electric cars. That required some kind of pressure.

– As we know, all beginnings are difficult. Things need to be adjusted, Rorvig said in March 2023. He elaborated on his point at the time.

Whip necessary for the future?

"Carrots are probably no longer enough. A certain amount of whipping is also needed to get the green transition going," said the director in 2023. This contrasts with the current high sales figures.

However, the current figures from 2025 show that Danes are largely choosing electric cars. The top ten list for the first quarter consists only of electric cars. This indicates a significant change in car buyers' preferences.

The question is whether the development is due to a changed attitude among buyers, or whether the market conditions and model selection have now become more attractive.

Rorvig's previous statements about 'whip' indicate that much of the sales in Denmark are created by artificially favorable conditions.

Both the car importers' interest group and the Danish Automobile Industry Confederation have also said that they fear that Danes will lose interest if politicians – as is the plan – increase the tax on electric cars.

The image and appetite for electric cars is somewhat different in the rest of Europe. A count from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association shows that only 1.8 percent of the European car fleet consists of electric cars.

Even if you include hybrid cars, the number of electrified cars cannot exceed 3.9 percent of the market.
