Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund (S) does not envisage electric cars becoming more expensive. They should be public property, he now says.
In 2024, electric cars were the Danes' preferred choice in the new car market. And now Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund (S) is demanding that society view electric cars as a kind of public property.
The Ministry of Taxation writes this in a press release .
– The numbers speak their own clear and pleasing language. The government is very concerned that we promote green transport, including more clean electric cars on Danish roads.
– We must ensure that electric cars become even more popular across the country, says the Minister of Taxation.
But Rasmus Stoklund is busy. The latest agreement on the registration tax from 2020 means that all taxes on passenger cars will increase in Denmark until 2035.
Ultimately, there should be no tax benefit at all from getting behind the wheel of an electric car. But now the government is imposing its own caps.
We must support the current development from a political perspective, because electric cars are crucial for us to move around the country in a greener way.
– We must move from the electric car being the Danes' preferred car choice to making the electric car public property. I hope we can take that step by ensuring that the incentives for Danes to buy an electric car continue to be present – and by ensuring that the cheaper electric cars in particular remain cheap, says the minister.
According to Rasmus Stoklund, the parties at Christiansborg will negotiate car taxes in Denmark again later this year. However, he will not discuss who will pay for the artificially low price of electric cars.
– I don't imagine that electric cars will be significantly more expensive. But we will look at how we can structure the different car taxes.
The Danish car importers' interest group Mobility Denmark has already proposed that all other cars be taxed at an increase. This is intended to ensure that electric cars remain tax-free. However, FDM strongly criticizes the proposal.Read more about it here .
